Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is happy to have a Junior Refuge Biologist and Junior Refuge Manager program for youth visiting the refuge with their families. During this guided program participants will explore the refuge together and earn the Junior Refuge Biologist patch.

Birds rely on several cues to guide them on their long, strenuous migrations. Just how do they know where to go and what to do? Join us for a 1,000 Mile Journey and learn how to migrate like a bird!

Nature Explorers

School is out – time to explore the outdoors! Join the Nature Explorers squad for a deep dive into the world of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. We will explore wetlands, the beach, forests, and more during a week of fun activities, including fishing, nature hikes, microscopes and more.

Wildlife Adventures

We are excited to bring back our one-day nature adventure for kids ages 5-10! We will explore the wildlife of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge through nature hikes, crafts, and games.

Sea Turtle Discovery

Virginia is the northernmost area where sea turtles consistently nest. During this four-hour day camp program we will learn about the diets, unique characteristics, and how to identify the various sea turtles that visit Virginia. Be prepared for walks on the beach, crafts and games!

Woody Survivors

Come to the refuge to learn about the common trees and shrubs in the Back Bay area. This outdoor program will include identification tips and interesting facts about each species. Some walking will be required.

Bat Bay

Bats play an important role in many ecosystems around the world. Bats help control pests by eating insects and in some parts of the world are important pollinators. During this program we will use a device to listen for bats and identify the types of bats in our local area. Please note this program will take place at the Refuge Headquarters Building, located at 1324 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.

Fishing Clinics

Looking for a new beach experience this year? The refuge is excited to have the Virginia Beach Anglers and Izaak Walton League host surf and freshwater fishing clinics this summer. No previous fishing experience is needed but we offer a warning – you might get hooked on fishing!

Clean the Bay Day

Each summer the Chesapeake Bay Foundation brings together organizations and volunteers throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed (and beyond!) to clean our coastal areas. Join the site at the refuge to clean the beach and keep our coast safe for everyone!

Struggles in the Sand

A sea turtle’s life begins with a struggle in the sand. Come learn what baby turtles must overcome to reach their ocean home. We will also share any updates about sea turtle nesting on Virginia Beach’s coastline!

Art Workshops

Is there a young artist in your family? Nature and art are a great combination! During each art session we will explore nature though a guided painting project. Past projects have included dragonflies, ocean waves and more.

Incredible Insects

Did you know there are over 800,000 species of insects on Earth? This diversity means there are many interesting and incredible traits found in this group of animals. In this program we will investigate insects through games and other hands-on activities.

Nature Journaling

If you love exploring the outdoors, a nature journal is a great way to remember all of the amazing things you find. Join us at the refuge as we use our senses to investigate our environment and keep track of it all in our nature journals. Every participant will go home with a nature journal!

Evening Tram Tours

Enjoy a fan favorite – a tram ride through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge on a summer evening. On this tram trip we will explore the wildlife refuge near sundown, searching for wildlife and discussing the history and management of the area. Please note this trip only travels through the wildlife refuge and does not take passengers into False Cape State Park.
