Do What Needs to Be Done

I’ve watched successful people for over forty years, and I’ve noticed something they have in common. Successful people don’t always feel motivated. They develop the discipline to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, regardless of how they feel.

They do what needs to be done when it needs to be done, whether they feel like doing it or not.

Feelings Don’t Set the Schedule

Motivation is useful, but it is unreliable. Some mornings you wake up ready to attack the day. Other mornings, you don’t.

The weather doesn’t always cooperate. Your energy isn’t always there. Your confidence comes and goes. Sometimes you simply don’t want to do the work.

That’s when discipline matters.

Professionals don’t wait for the right mood. They show up and do the work anyway.

Build the Muscle

The difference isn’t always talent, opportunity, or luck. More often, it is the ability to keep moving when quitting would be easier. That ability is a muscle. And like any muscle, it gets stronger with use.

Start small:

  • Keep the promise you made to yourself.
  • Finish the job you started.
  • Take the walk when you don’t feel like walking.
  • Make the call you’ve been avoiding.
  • Do the work before you decide whether you feel motivated.
  • Show up on the days when nobody is watching.

You don’t have to feel ready. You don’t have to feel motivated. You simply have to decide what needs to be done and do it.

Discipline Over Motivation

At some point, success becomes less about how you feel and more about what you are willing to do.

Feelings change. Circumstances change. Motivation comes and goes.

Discipline gives you something to stand on when they do.

Develop that muscle early. Keep developing it as you get older. Eventually, showing up becomes part of who you are. And when the moment comes when every fiber of your being says quit, you’ll have already learned the answer:

Do what needs to be done.
